Freight Volume of China-Europe Freight Train's "Central Route" Surpasses 3 Million Tons in 2023, Up 30.29% Year-on-Year
In 2023, the freight volume of China-Europe freight trains passing through the Erenhot Port in Inner Mongolia exceeded 3 million tons, reaching 3.35 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 30.29%. The total value of goods transported reached 51.3 billion yuan, up 37.39% year-on-year.
As the largest land port on the China-Mongolia border, Erenhot Port is a crucial node in the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor and a key pivot for China's opening to the north. It is the sole entry and exit port for the "Central Route" of the China-Europe freight trains. Since the launch of the first "Chengdu-Europe" train in 2013, the number of train routes has increased from the initial 2 to 70, passing through 77 domestic departure (and arrival) stations and 23 provinces, covering North China, Central China, South China, and other regions. Internationally, the trains traverse 12 countries and 72 foreign destinations or cities. The goods transported include a wide variety of products such as information technology products (e.g., mobile phones and computers), complete vehicles and auto parts, mechanical and electrical equipment, furniture, building materials, and more.
In recent years, the proportion of high-value-added and high-tech products such as new energy vehicles and parts, as well as high-end mechanical equipment, transported by China-Europe freight trains through Erenhot Port has significantly increased. The export of domestic-brand vehicles has evolved from a new trend to a regular practice, with more than 10 domestic automotive brands exported through Erenhot Port. The "new three major exports" (referring to emerging export products) have become a new driving force, with rapid growth in the export of domestic smart home appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, and dishwashers.
To ensure the efficient and smooth operation of China-Europe freight trains, Erenhot Customs has deepened business reforms, achieving the implementation of the "Railway Express" clearance model for both inbound and outbound trains. This has streamlined three customs data review processes, saving enterprises 1–2 days in clearance time. The port has also explored a "direct loading upon arrival" logistics model, enabling non-inspected goods to be "transported, cleared, and loaded on the same day," significantly improving the efficiency of China-Europe freight trains. A 24/7 appointment-based clearance mechanism has been established to ensure that goods are "cleared upon arrival, inspected promptly, and released immediately." Advanced non-intrusive inspection methods, such as remote video-assisted inspection and mobile boom inspection, have been actively adopted to enhance smart supervision capabilities. Close coordination and efficient collaboration with railway departments have been strengthened to promptly address clearance bottlenecks and challenges, ensuring the smooth operation of the railway port.
Currently, the clearance time for China-Europe freight trains has been reduced to 3 hours, with an average of 9 trains passing through the port daily
